Toward the Sacred, album by Jim Valley

Who the heck is Jim Valley? Depends on who you ask. To his late 1950s-early-1960s fans he is one of the pioneers of Northwest rock and roll. To his mid 1960s fans he will always be the affable "Harpo," lead guitarist for Paul Revere and the Raiders at the height of their nationwide popularity. Only a few remember Jim as part of L.A.'s famed Laurel Canyon singer-songwriter scene of the later 60s, or his return to his native Pacific Northwest to play in a series of folk-rock ensembles and religious projects. No doubt, Jim's largest fanbase knows him--worldwide-- as a purveyor of some of the best children's music ever produced, tens of thousands of kids having learned his songs and participated in his songwriting workshops. Then there have always been friends and acquaintances who have gathered around his piano to listen to drop-down gorgeous songs that soar into the heavens and penetrate the deepest questions of us all. That's the version of Jim Valley that takes charge on his newest album, Toward the Sacred.

This album is a collection, all of which lean "toward the sacred"... bonding with and loving the Universe. To that purpose, Jim has enlisted some highly qualified co-writers, including for the lead-off song, "Vespers," the wondrous A.A. Milne, who gave us Winnie the Pooh (which, of course, inspired Benjamin Hoff's and E. H. Shepard's The Tao of Pooh), as well as one of the most popular poets of all time, Rumi, for three songs. Another highlight of this album is the song "Children of the Same World," the lyrics of which were written by fifth graders. When you can coax children to channel the spiritual, you know you've worked some magic.

This is a sacred voyage journey by one of the most unique singer-songwriters in American music, Jim Valley. Enjoy the trip to where dreams come true, where birds fall and are given wings and all you have to do is open the love window... and breathe.

Toward the Sacred album by Jim Valley

R E V I E W S
"Jim's Album - 'Toward The Sacred Valley' - hmm, sounds like a gospel album. No, wait - It's called "Toward The Sacred" and it's BY Jim Valley. He's the artist. Got it. My dictionary defines sacred as "devoted or dedicated to a deity". An apt title then, for this collection of gems that gently turn the listener towards feelings of gratitude and wonderment for all the beauty around us, much of which is too often taken for granted or missed entirely. You don't HAVE to live on a pristine corner of Puget Sound, surrounded by a plethora of colorful plant life in order to connect with a higher power, but to hear the warm, melodic and soulful music of Jim Valley, you realize it must be helpful. The fact that you're reading this means that you are moving Toward The Sacred right now and are in for a special, uplifting experience (and not just from my flute parts). This record, for me, shows the way to a sweet rich connectedness with all that we venerate and take inspiration from. If this is a gospel record, the gospel is joy, love and awareness of the rich gifts we possess if we merely open ourselves to them, with a healthy dose of whimsy. Also, the boy picks a mean piano and guitar. Thanks for the tunes, James."
-- Jim Hoke, Hillside Studio, Nashville
"The multi-talented singer/songwriter/musician Jim Valley never ceases to amaze me and has carefully crafted a diverse, contemplative, warm and affirming collection of new songs I find both inspiring and comforting. The musicianship is outstanding, bringing the rich and tasteful arrangements into vivid detail. Jim is a wonderful vocalist who always finds a way to make a deep, emotional connection. In all, this is a captivating eclectic and highly accessible record that reveals new elements and dimensions every time I hear it."
-- Jeff Green, Stone Door Media Lab
"From the innocence and optimism of youth in "Vespers", the peacefulness of "And the Garden", the tenderness of "I Do You", the sincerity of the gospel influenced "Come To Me Slowly" and the joy of "Inside Your Heart" Jim Valley's latest offering contains something to nourish the soul of any listener. Great writing and arrangements embellished by world class players make this project worthy of attention."
-- Marc Willett

"Those who have been looking forward to Jim Valley's latest release can now be richly rewarded. Jim's strong vocals and harmonies, the great ensemble playing, and deft arrangements are all in service of the CD's message: the elevation of the human spirit, with grace, love, and direction Toward the Sacred. Great songs each on their own, all together a wonderful bouquet of hope, gentleness, and warmth. Happy listening!"
-- Rick Ravenscroft

"Your music exudes beauty, peace and the Wisdom of Love. Beautiful songs with timeless messages of what is good in this world. I don't think I can choose a favorite on Toward the Sacred, but I'll start by saying the favorite thing about listening to any of your albums is your amazing voice. Your vocals are rich, warm and soothing. Your beautiful warm heart comes through your voice, so exquisitely on everything you sing. As far as the songs on this album are concerned, some particular favorites of mine are 'And the Garden,' 'I Will Sing' and 'Breathe.' And I suppose 'Father Eternity' should also be on that list. But sincerely I love all the songs. This one has been living in my car! A HIGHLY recommended soundtrack to anyone's life."
-- Pamela Polland

"It is hard to put into a few words the power as well as the softness of this collection. It is like you were destined to put these songs into one collection that is very spiritual and healing as well as feeling very personal. I am sure it is a 'beautiful baby' of yours that will be appreciated by many. It is also a very raw and personal insight into who you are so again the collection is personal right at the heart of yourself I feel. But here are my thoughts to draw others into it. Come and center yourself in a state of restful repose with Jim's most personal music composed with both the majority of the lyrics and music by Jim. 'Toward the Sacred' will take you on a journey to a place of comfort through both a child like relevance as well as voices that stretch your imagination. What begins the collection is a childlike prayer for Christopher Robin and ends with 'Father Eternity.' In between Jim puts words to spiritual walks and dreams that feel both personal from him to you. They will both carry you into dreams of an inner sense with 'Breathe' as well as make you feel one with the beautiful surrounding of this earth with 'Witchi Tai.'"
-- Dianna

"With 'Toward the Sacred' Jim Valley has released a collection of beautiful, heartfelt songs that showcase his talents as a singer, songwriter and musician. With its meaningful lyrics, compelling melodies and soulful performances, this CD will put you at ease and connect you to a spirit of love and peace. Jim's songs always make me feel at home and this one is no exception to that rule. A glowing recommendation for 'Toward the Sacred!'"
-- Dennis Hysom

"'Toward the Sacred' touches on spirituality and culture, and promises and hope. The songs in this collection will surely lift your spirits and encourage you to get lost in them in a way only Jim Valley can."
-- Linda Edlund

"It makes sense that the guy, who used to mouth 'I love you' on camera to the Where The Action Is fans, would make such beautiful and sacred music. If I had to pick the best five songs on his newest CD I don't think I could do it. They're all very gratifying. Jim's voice is so evocative and alluring. When a voice compliments the lyrics perfectly, it is a marriage made in heaven for this music lover. Jim delivers that notion throughout. His guitar and piano playing is certainly top notch. The varied styles, instrumentation and performances by all the musicians on here are just phenomenal on every track. Upon hearing the music on this CD, you'll be certain this lovely soul is one with the universe."
-- Jazz Bro

"Come and center yourself in a state of restful repose with Jim's most personal music. 'Sacred' will take you on a journey to a place of comfort through both a child-like relevance as well as voices that stretch your imagination. What begins the collection is a prayer for Christopher Robin and ends with 'Father Eternity.' In between Jim puts words to spiritual walks and dreams that feel both personal from him to you. They will both carry you into dreams of an inner sense with 'Breathe' as well as make you feel one with the beautiful surrounding of this earth with Witchi Tai.'"
-- Dianna Veleke

"When Jim first told me he was putting music to some of the poems of Rumi, my first thought was, 'That's not likely to turn out well.' I should know; I tried it. I have no idea what the original Persian versions may have sounded like, but English translations of Rumi have little rhyme or steady rhythm, you know, the language that songs are made of. Thusly, my attempt to commune melodically with Rumi failed completely, so I turned to co-write instead with poets who spoke English, like Lord Byron and Edgar Allan Poe. But when Jim brought 'Breathe' over to my studio for experimentation, I was proven wrong. In this stripped down but dazzling gem, Jim expertly and effortlessly channels the old Sufi sage. Rumi's notion of the sacred was spiritual, not religious. Directly opposite of religion, in spirituality there are no rules, no rites, no regulations, no dogma, no deacons, no preachers, no priests, no church, no holy text, no saviors, no sinners, no laws, no limits, no heaven, no hell. There is nothing, in fact, but love. Yet in that love there is everything. Rumi was a lover... of the universe. There is no higher calling. Wouldn't you know it would take another lover of the world, seven centuries later, to provide an adequate soundtrack to these lyrics? In this album, 'Toward the Sacred,' Jim is doing the same thing in different ways over and over again, just like Rumi, trying to give voice to that love. These are sacred songs, all reaching in their own way for that connection, that bond, that union with the universe. If you peel back the messages of all of the great spiritual leaders, you discover that's the quest they were on, too. Funny that such a sweetly soulful singer and deep thematic diver would emerge from a former teen idol, rock 'n roller, but this pathway is nothing new for Jim Valley. Even his children's music shares this quintessential spiritual quest, and all of his friends know how much love for the world this human carries lightly with him. Listen carefully to Jim's new album. You are sharing time with a singular singer-songwriter of great depth, showing the way toward the sacred."

VESPERS
(Music by Jim Valley; Lyrics by A.A. Milne and Jim Valley)

Little boy kneels at the foot of his bed
Droops on his little hands little gold head
Hush now hush! Whisper who dares
Christopher Robin is saying his prayers
Christopher Robin is saying his prayers

Now God bless Mommy I know that's right
Wasn't it fun in the bath tonight?
The cold's so cold and the hot's so hot!
God bless Daddy I quite forgot
God bless Daddy

If I open my fingers a little bit more
I can see Nanny's dressing-gown on the door
It's a beautiful blue but it hasn't a hood
God bless Nanny and make her good
God bless Nanny

Now mine has a hood and I lie in bed
And pull that hood right over my head
I shut my eyes and I curl up small
Nobody knows that I'm there at all
Nobody knows

Thank you God for this beautiful day
And what was the other that I had to say
I said bless Mommy so what can it be?
Now I remember! God bless me
Now I remember! God bless me

Little boy kneels at the foot of his bed
Droops on his little hands little gold head
Hush now hush, whisper who dares
Christopher Robin is saying his prayers

Now let me become all that I am
Let me become all that I am
A tree is green and blue is the sky
And a bird can fly and why can't I?
Let me become all... all that I am

LOVE IS THE WAY
(Music by Jim Valley; Lyrics by Rumi)

Love Is the Way messengers from the mystery
Tell us things, all kinds of things
Love is the Mother; we are her sons and daughters
And she shines bright inside us

Visible, invisible, as we trust or lose trust
Or feel it start to grow again
Visible, invisible, as we trust or lose trust
Or feel it start to grow again

In your light I learn how to love
In your beauty how to make poems
You dance inside my chest where no one sees you
Sometimes I do and that sight becomes this art
We're going to start, again

Love Is the Way messengers from the mystery
Tell us things, all kinds of things
Love is the Mother; we are her sons and daughters
And she shines bright inside us

Visible, invisible, as we trust or lose trust
Or feel it start to grow again
Visible, invisible, as we trust or lose trust
Or feel it start to grow again

Love is the way messengers from the mystery
Love Is the Way
Love Is the Way

CHILDREN OF THE SAME WORLD
(Music by Jim Valley; Lyrics by Fiona Sheridan's 5th Grade Jakarta Internationa)

No matter where you come from,
No matter where you're born
We are the Children
We are the Children
Children of the Same World

Children gathered on the darkest night
Wished for peace with all their might
A shooting star heard their plea
Raced 'round the world to see
That peace belongs to you and me

No matter where you come from,
No matter where you're born
We are the Children
We are the Children
Children of the Same World

We share the same watery planet
The same starry sky
Family of man cannot be denied

No matter where you come from,
No matter where you're born
We are the Children
We are the Children
Children of the Same World

HEAVEN'S SONG
(Music and lyrics by Jim Valley)

The sky above asked the earth below
Where do your gentle waters flow?
The earth replied, "Deep inside
A caring heart where love abides"
And the sea goes on forever

The mountain tree asked the bird in flight,
"Where do your children sleep tonight?"
Sang the bird in song so fair,
"They'll sleep in dreams beyond compare"
And kindness goes on forever

And when they wake with the dawn
They'll bathe the world in Heaven's Song
And love the place where they belong
Heaven's Song

The sky above asked the earth below
Where do your gentle waters flow?
The earth replied, "Deep inside
A caring heart where love abides"
And the sea goes on forever, forever

AND THE GARDEN
(Music and lyrics by Jim Valley)

Children listen sing the story
Magic kingdom within
Moon and stars and all their glory
And the Garden, And the Garden

There's a tree growing deep in the forest
Roots a'growing down inside the earth
And their limbs stretching high toward the heavens
And their leaves with their ever new birth

Sing children sing in the morning when you rise
Sing children sing, sing for your lives

There's an old man high on a mountain
Hands in the air to greet the day
He's a hermit holding on to a candle
Love in his eyes to help light the way
Love in his eyes to help light the way, the way, the way

Sing children sing on your way back home
Sing children sing when you're feeling all alone
Sing children children sing Alleluia, Sing children children sing Alleluia

Children listen sing the story
Magic kingdom within
And the moon and stars and all that glory
And the Garden, And the Garden And the Garden
And the Garden, And the Garden

I DO YOU
(Music and lyrics by Jim Valley)

Could you climb to a mountain top
When you reach that point you would not stop
There before you in the clear blue air
Angels beckon on golden stairs
Music dances in your soul
Rhapsodies you've somehow always known
How the heart loves to dream
The way I love you the way it seems
That I Do You
The way I Do You
Do You

Find yourself in a forest still
Nature's will
Eyes shining bright like the sun
But soft like the moon
Wind and rain ease this pain
The way I Do You
The way I Do You
Do you, do you, I'd do anything, anything for you
Do you

Could you climb to a mountain top
When you reach that point you would not stop
There before you in the clear blue air
Angels beckon on golden stairs
Mmmmmm in your soul
Rhapsodies you've somehow always known
How the heart loves to dream
The way I love you the way it seems
That I Do You the way I Do You
The way I Do you the way I Do You
The way I Do you the way I Do You
The way I Do you the way I Do You

(Music and lyrics by Jim Valley)

Come To Me Slowly come to me sure
Sing to me joyful but sing to me pure
Reach for me higher with all thy might
And share with me this day this wonderful light
Wonderful light

Oh my soul release and behold
We'll go places beyond control
Oh my soul

Now call me the father sister of the son
Call me darling loved one
Search for me constant thru the night
And I'll come to you in the morning light
Morning light, morning light
Like a seabird in golden flight

Oh my soul release and behold
We'll go places beyond control
Oh my sou, oh my soul, release and behold

Oh my soul oh my soul release and behold
And the Kingdom of Heaven will surely unfold

BIRD SONG
(Music by Jim Valley; Lyrics by Rumi)

Bird Song brings relief to my longing
I am just as ecstatic as they are
But with nothing to say
Please, universal soul, practice some song
Or something through me

The way of love is not a subtle argument
The door there is devastation

Birds make great sky circles of their freedom
How do they learn it, how do they learn it?
They fall...
And they're given wings
They fall, and falling they're giving wings

Bird Song brings relief to my longing
Bird Song brings relief

BREATHE
(Music by Jim Valley; Lyrics by Rumi)

There is some kiss we want with our whole lives
Touch of spirit on the body
There is some kiss we want

Seawater begs the pearl to break its shell
And the lilly, how passionately
It needs some wild darling

At night I open the window
And ask the moon to come
Press its face against mine

And Breathe, Breathe into me
Breathe,
Breathe into me

Close the language door, open the love window
The moon won't use the door, only the window

Breathe into me, Breathe
Breathe into me, Breathe
Breathe into me

There is some kiss we want
Breathe into me

I WILL SING
(Music and lyrics by Jim Valley)

I played you as you walked into the room
And you heard me as I knew it could be
I was singing but the music came from you
I was singing but the music came from you

So play me in the evening when the birds are fast asleep
You give me confidence to realize this dream I keep
Take me to your secret room, fold me to your wing
And in the morning, in the morning I Will Sing, I Will Sing
I Will Sing the passion loving you can bring

I played you as you walked into the room
And you hear me as I trust it can be
I am singing but the music comes from you
I am singing but the music comes from you

So play me in the evening when the birds are fast asleep
You give me confidence to realize these dreams I keep
Take me to your secret room, fold me to your wing

INSIDE YOUR HEART
(Music and lyrics by Jim Valley)

I saw a Leprechaun, he was dancin' on a leaf
In the hour of my lightest sleep
He was so fair and I saw him dancin' there
And he had lilac in his hair

He said, "I dance in the morning and I dance in the Spring
On the day when the bridegroom sings
On the star," he said, "outside the moon,"
He said, "I dance Inside Your Heart, inside the smallest room."

I saw a Fairy, she was playing on a leaf
In the hour of my deepest sleep
She was so fair and I saw her dreamin' there
She had jasmine in her hair

She said, "I dance in the morning and I dance in the Spring,
And I dance on the day when the bridegroom sings."
"On the star," she said, "Outside the moon," she said
"Inside Your Heart, inside the smallest room."
Inside Your Heart, Inside Your Heart.

She said, "I dance on the mountain high, valley far below
Where the rivers flow and the angels grow."
Come on, angels.
"On the stars," they said, "Outside the moon," they said
"We dance Inside Your Heart, inside the smallest room,
Inside Your Heart, Inside Your Heart."

Inside Your Heart, Inside Your Heart.
inside the smallest room
